01A school of science outreach

The Napoli Digital Tales project is made up of two modules, funded by the Campania Region and Renovatio, with the support of the Università degli Studi della Campania Luigi Vanvitelli.

Thirty young people under 35 engaged with digital tools, the design of cultural initiatives and data monitoring, putting into practice new skills and new ways of experiencing heritage.

The second module involved a selection of the students in producing four videos on as many important tombs of illustrious figures in Naples. San Giovanni a Carbonara, Santa Maria del Parto, Sant’Anna dei Lombardi and the Cappella Sansevero are treasures of a cultural fabric that deserves to be told, promoted and appreciated — and, in our small way, we tried.

San Giovanni a Carbonara: the tomb of Ladislaus of Durazzo, King of Naples.

03The four tombs

San Giovanni a Carbonara. The funerary monument that rises imposingly in the apse celebrates the virtues of Ladislaus of Durazzo, King of Naples. Maria Regina guides us on an extraordinary tour of the church: from the monument of Ladislaus to the Somma, Caracciolo del Sole and Caracciolo di Vico chapels, up to the monumental staircase.

Santa Maria del Parto. The church rises above the buildings of Mergellina, holding the extraordinary tomb of the poet Jacopo Sannazaro: it was the humanist himself who commissioned its construction and set its iconographic program. Alessia helps us appreciate its poetic charm, amid classical references and Renaissance solutions.

Cappella Sansevero. The monument of the 7th Prince reflects the eclecticism of Raimondo di Sangro. Francesca leads us from the Prince’s tomb to the underground chamber with the anatomical machines, among the exquisite sculptures by Corradini and Queirolo, up to the majestic Veiled Christ by Giuseppe Sanmartino.

Sant’Anna dei Lombardi. Born as Santa Maria di Monteoliveto, it holds a centuries-old history: Fabio takes us through the Renaissance chapels that united Naples and Florence, into Vasari’s magnificent Sacristy and down into the Crypt of the Abbots, one of Naples’s underground treasures.
